Vote Yes: LA County Measure A for Sheriff Accountability

IKAR stands with communities of color that have been historically over-policed, under-resourced, and subject to police violence. Our partners in these impacted communities have called on us to support Los Angeles County Measure A. We stand with them.

Holding power to account is a Jewish value – from Moses standing up to Pharaoh; to the Sages of the Talmud’s righteous opposition to the Roman empire; to Jewish participation in the Civil Rights movement; to our own efforts to stop police from engaging in violent and oppressive practices.

Most elected officials are subject to robust oversight, but the LA County Sheriff has for too long been ignoring any effective accountability review between election cycles. In 2020, LA County voters approved Measure R to create the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission. IKAR supported this measure. But the current Sheriff has defied multiple subpoenas from this commission, and refused to be subjected to any civilian oversight. Measure A would punish future Sheriffs who defy the law and refuse to be accountable for misconduct.

Measure A would allow the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to remove the elected sheriff from office for cause by a 4/5 vote. We urge you to vote YES on Measure A.

Election Day is on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.
