Distressed About the World? Read More Fiction.

November 4th, 2017 — Shabbat Vayera

Rabbi Sharon Brous

Why do we take a break from our story– the story of Abraham and Sarah– to follow the travails of Hagar and Ishmael? Because the purpose of life isn’t only to hear and repeat our own stories. It is to hear theirs too. As author Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give) says: “Books are either mirrors, windows or sliding glass doors. I want them to be all three.” We tell stories to see ourselves, to see others, AND to change way we engage others.
