When we look out only for ourselves and our close family and friends, we miss the opportunity for spiritual growth and social transformation. The wisdom of the month of Elul invites us to engage more deeply, thoughtfully and deliberately than is comfortable, in the hopes that we not only change our own hearts, but overturn the very structures that have led to the conflicts in the first place.
