Rebecca, Mother of Doubt – Rabbi David Kasher

November 10th, 2018 — Shabbat Toldot

Rebecca doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the primary shapers of the Jewish story. She, like Abraham, leaves her homeland and everything she knows in order to help start a new religion. She takes charge of her family, and makes the critical decisions that will affect the course of Jewish peoplehood. But before she grows into the fullness of her powers, we find her struggling with some basic existential questions: What are we doing here? And where is God amidst of all the world’s suffering? We, the Children of Rebecca, will inherit from her a legacy of faith – and also one of doubt.
