IKAR urges you to vote YES on State Proposition 1 for Abortion Access. As our Rabbis have said time and time again, a person’s right to privacy is sacred. The life of the pregnant person takes precedence in our tradition. We believe that decisions about a person’s body and health belong in the hands of the individual, and not the U.S. Supreme Court.
What would Prop. 1 do?
This ballot measure would amend the California Constitution to enshrine a fundamental right to reproductive freedom. That includes the right to choose to have an abortion and the right to choose or refuse contraceptives. Click here to read the full proposition.
Why is it on the Ballot?
The California Constitution guarantees everyone the right to privacy. Historically, this language has been understood to preserve reproductive rights. Abortion and contraceptive access were later expressly protected in state law.
The U.S. Supreme Court decision in June overturning Roe v. Wade, however, has raised fears that a change in legal interpretation or a change in control of the state legislature could undermine those protections for Californians in the future. The only way to ensure this doesn’t happen would be to amend the state constitution through Prop 1.
Election Day is on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.
