Steve Byrnes

Steve’s connection to IKAR grew deeper when he got involved with its Minyan Tzedek Organizing Path. He looks forward to deeper future involvement with this work, which post-election is more essential than ever.

A writer by trade, Steve has written and performed two one-man shows: “Swinging Wild” and “Your Daddy’s A Fag…And So’s Your Other Daddy.” The latter is based on his real life experience as a gay dad.

Steve’s greatest creations are his two daughters, Samantha and Elizabeth. After Samantha was born, Steve and his husband Jamie had a combination Jewish commitment ceremony and baby naming. Undoubtedly, it was the first such ceremony in the known universe.

In addition to serving on the IKAR Board, Steve serves on the President’s Strategic Planning Committee at his alma mater, Reed College. He coaches underserved LAUSD students on the college admissions process through the Zimmer Children’s Museum’s YOUthink college prep program, has served on the U.S. board of “Spirituality for Kids” and taught their curriculum in LAUSD schools, and Steve’s family’s organization, S.A.M. (School Attendance Matters), provides sanitary pads, underwear, and sex education for schoolgirls in Malawi.
