Welcome to IKAR’s Adult Learning Line-up for 5786. We’ve got something for everyone. Let’s learn, grow, and connect together.

For the Love of Learning with Rabbi Brous and Rabbi Panitz

Tuesdays through 5/26/26, 9:15-10:15am PT, Hybrid (IKAR Event Space + Zoom)
In Person RSVP / Zoom RSVP
Every Tuesday morning, a new story from the Talmud. Taught by Rabbi Brous and Rabbi Panitz in a monthly rotation, we’ll dig into the strange and compelling world of the Talmud, exploring the ways ancient dilemmas speak to modern questions. Join us in-person at the Event Space (coffee and nosh provided) or over Zoom (B.Y.O. nosh) for as many sessions as possible… your Tuesday will thank you. Note: Parking in the area relaxes at 9 am.

The Weekly Parashah with Rabbi David Kasher

Wednesdays, 12pm PT, Zoom, RSVP
Join us for a literary study of the text of the Torah, aided by the keen eyes of the classical commentators. Please note that the class will not meet on 11/26/25 or on Jewish holidays. This series is co-sponsored with Hadar.

Word for Word: Healthy Communication, from Torah to TikTok with Rabbinic Intern, Jacob Schatz

Wednesdays, 2/18, 25, 3/4, 7pm PT, Zoom, RSVP
In this four-part series, we will explore how Judaism addresses kind and harmful speech, beginning with Torah and developing over the history of Halakhah (Jewish law). We will study the laws of Ona’at D’varim (harmful speech) as both a window into ancient and contemporary Jewish values, as well as the ongoing process of biblical and legal interpretation.

In the Midnight Hour: Music, Poetry & Prayer Workshop with Guest Educator, Shep Rosenman

Mondays, 2/23, 7pm, IKAR Event Space (1729 S. La Cienega Blvd), RSVP
Step into four immersive, in-person sessions where tradition meets artistic inspiration. During each two-hour session, together, we’ll explore passages from Tehillim (Psalms) found in the Shabbat liturgy, unpack their messages in open discussion, and transform our insights into fresh songs and poems. No experience needed—just curiosity, an open heart, and willingness to experiment! Bring your instruments, your voices, a notebook, or a recording device. Make liturgical poetry and music your own. Come for learning, leave with inspiration—and maybe a new melody in your heart. Whether you’re a seasoned musician, a passionate amateur, or simply a soul seeking meaning, there’s a place for you here. Join for one session or all four—each meeting is a new chance to create and connect.

Conscious Aging 5786 with Rabbi Deborah Silver

Sundays, 3/8, 4/12, 5/17, 6/14, 9:30-11am PT, Zoom, RSVP
This drop-in class is open to anyone who wants to explore the subject of our aging, with the aim of creating community as we turn towards this largely uncharted terrain. At every meeting, we will consider a short piece by Anne Lamott, which will serve as a springboard for practical exercises and conversations that incorporate our tradition’s wisdom and our own. Together we will set new goals for approaching our aging with insight, grace, purpose – and humor. Recommended age 55+.

Creating A Spiritual Biography with Rabbi Deborah Silver

Thursdays, 3/12, 19, 26, 4/9, 16, 23, 7pm PT, Zoom, RSVP
It is the nature of human beings to create stories. Yet, when it comes to our own lives, when we tell ourselves our own stories – whether by way of resume, family history, screenplay or any other form of autobiography – we also record our relationship with our own self. Spiritual biography is different.  In this short course, based on the method created by Kathleen Dowling Singh in The Grace in Living, we will engage, together and separately, in recording our encounters with the sacred, using them as lenses through which to understand our evolving relationship with the Divine. Please commit to attending the whole series of classes.

The Magical Mind of Midrash with Rabbi Morris Panitz

Wednesdays, 4/15, 22, 29, 5/6, 7pm PT, Zoom, RSVP
In the gaps, the ambiguities, the contradictions, and the mysteries of Torah, Midrash is born. Like a flower emerging from the crack in the sidewalk, a new image captures our attention, transforming the entire landscape. In this four-part series, we’ll investigate the project of Midrash– where these new stories come from and how they shape our understanding of both the Torah and its interpreters.

TRIBE (20's-30's) School with Rabbi Hannah Jensen

2nd Tuesday of every month, 7pm, IKAR Event Space (1729 S. La Cienega Blvd), RSVP
Once a month, TRIBE is creating our own Beit Midrash (house of study) for us to engage with Jewish text to find how we can live more fulfilling, meaningful lives as we navigate our 20s and 30s! Each session will take us on a journey of text exploration and introspective work. Part of the session will be studying in hevruta, or with a study partner, and part of the session will be taught by Rabbi Hannah Jensen. No previous text study required! Join us for dinner, study, and lively discussion.

Conversion Cohort with Rabbi Hannah Jensen

Sundays, every other month, 4pm, IKAR Event Space (1729 S. La Cienega Blvd), Email [email protected]
This bi-monthly gathering is a chance for recent converts, new Jews, and people early in the process of exploring Judaism to come together. The goals are to get to know each other, share what people are thinking about or struggling with or excited about in their current Jewish journeys, and prepare for and debrief holidays and lifecycle events. All questions and reflections welcome! Open to anyone who has converted in the last 3 years or is beginning the process now.

Creating A Spiritual Biography with Rabbi Deborah Silver (Virtual)
It is the nature of human beings to create stories. Yet, when it comes to our own lives, when we tell ourselves our own stories – whether by way of resume, family history, screenplay or any other form of autobiography – we also record our relationship with our own self. Spiritual biography is different.  In this short course, based on the method created by Kathleen Dowling Singh in The Grace in Living, we will engage, together and separately, in recording our encounters with the sacred, using them as lenses through which to understand our evolving relationship with the Divine. Please commit to attending the whole series of classes.
