B’Mitzvah Timeline
Here is a timeline of our B’Mitzvah process. We do our best to ensure everything runs smoothly for you – in return, we ask that you help us by letting us know your concerns and questions promptly so we can address them for you.
Rabbi Deborah Silver supervises our B’Mitzvah process. Our Hazzan, Hillel Tigay, co-ordinates all the special reading skills. Ivy Sears, our Clergy and B’Mitzvah Associate, is in charge of all scheduling. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch.
4th Grade (Jan/Feb)
The process begins here with choosing a date! Please select one using this form.
13-14 months out
Please fill out the Family Information Form
One-hour Kick Off Meeting for student and family with Rabbi Silver
After the meeting, Hillel pairs the student with their Torah/Haftarah tutor.
Student begins to meet with tutor weekly, in addition to Limudim
6 months out
Student is paired with one of our clergy as Drash (Torah Talk) Guide.
Schedule 3 Drash meetings, the first for parents and student , the others for student only.
Please calendar the dates Ivy will give you for Photoshoot/Final Rehearsal/Final Drash Meeting. Please begin to fill out your Shabbat Lunch Sponsoring Form and contact Susan Brooks with any questions
Student works with tutor and clergy on Torah/Haftarah and Drash
3 months out
Student meets with Hazzan Hillel Tigay to check in on Torah/Haftarah readings
Ivy will offer you a Mikvah date
Please ensure we have received your Shabbat Lunch Sponsoring Form
Please fill out the B’Mitzvah Booklet Questions
Please confirm your Photoshoot date (you select your own photographer)
Student continues to work on the Drash and sends final draft to Ivy
1 month out
Student, family, Drash Guide and Rabbi Brous meet for final input on the Drash
Student and parents meet Rabbi Silver to check in on Torah/Haftarah readings and schedule going forward
Student will immerse in the Mikvah
Please fill out and submit the Honors Form (due 1 month prior to date)
Please finalize the B’Mitzvah Booklet Questions (due 2 weeks prior to date)
Student polishes Torah/Haftarah readings and completes B’Mitzvah Booklet Questions
The Week Of
Student has final rehearsal with Hillel Tigay, Rabbi Silver or Akiva Potok
The Day Of
Come early (9.00am) to get settled – and breathe, you got this!
Costs
WHAT | DESCRIPTION |
Sponsoring Shabbat Lunch/Kiddush | Purpose: A celebration with family, friends, and community for all your hard work!
Cost: Ranging from $2,000 and up. |
Mikvah | Purpose: To mark your spiritual transition
Cost: $65 paid directly to the Mikvah. Contact: Parents/B’Mitzvah Assistant will make the appointment and the Mikvah Director will follow up closer to the date. |
Kitah Zayin Fund (included in 7th grade Limudim tuition) | Purpose: Participation in the class gift (chosen by students in 6th grade), contribution to Kiddush and HaMotzi for fellow classmates
Cost: $360 |
B’Mitzvah Fee (included in 7th grade Limudim tuition) | Purpose: Covers costs for Rabbi and Music Director meetings, staffing, B’Mitzvah booklet and other administrative needs
Cost: $1000 |
Individual Tutoring |
Purpose: One on one teaching to learn Torah, haftarah and parts of the Torah service.
Cost: IKAR–approved tutors range from $50-$150 per session. If this creates financial strain for you, please make a private appointment with Rabbi Silver or Hazzan Tigay to discuss. Note: If you do not want to work with an IKAR-approved tutor, you must set up an appointment for the person you have chosen to be approved by Hazzan Tigay in good time for the first lesson.
