Dismantling Shame
Shabbat Naso Sermon. Father Greg Boyle calls us to dismantle the shame that stands in the way of us being who we’re called to be in the world. Today, I hear many wrestling with white shame, born of the aching realization that centuries of use of brutal force to control black people was ostensibly done for white Americans, to assure white people that they were safe and protected. The veil is lifted now; but shame will only quash positive action. We must work to transform shame into responsibility, so that we, together, can build the just, equitable, multiracial society waiting to be born.
