I learned to advocate as a young high school teacher of Deaf kids in the mid 1970’s. Their families and the world preferred them to “appear” like hearing kids. So, along with teaching language arts, I advocated for their right to speak in sign language both in school and in their lives. To be allowed to be who they were, which included being deaf.

Years later, as I followed my love of art and design and became an architectural designer, I advocated for a built world that supported people while making beautiful spaces.

Simultaneously, feeling the needs of a young family, I began building a Jewish life. After study, conversion, and joining a Jewish community, I knew that my Jewish life was fundamental to me. I found my way to IKAR and when the Minyan Tzedek paths began, over 12 years ago, I grew into a leadership role for the Community Organizing team that works on social justice through advocacy and legislation. Many years later, I still am a proud member of the Community Organizing steering committee and believe strongly in the work we do. Several years after I joined IKAR, I became a Board member for six years and am currently on the Advisory Board, hoping to give back to the community that means so much to me.
