L&L: Hadar Aviram “Behind Ancient Bars” in conversation with Rabbi Hannah Jensen and Naomi Ackerman

In Behind Ancient Bars, law professor and rabbinical student Hadar Aviram challenges the conventional assumption that incarceration is an artifact of modernity by looking back to depictions of detention and confinement in the Hebrew Bible. Drawing on her experience as a leading voice against mass incarceration, she finds connections between antiquity and the contemporary understanding of incarceration that encompasses not just the prison itself but also pretrial/immigration detention, bail, electronic monitoring, parole, and post-release supervision.

Infusing ancient biblical stories with fresh life through modern punishment theories, Aviram shows how incarceration has much to teach us about government, the experience of people in confinement, and the strength and resilience of the human spirit across millennia.

“Even when / Cry and Plead, My Prayer is Stifled” (Eicha 3:8) Jeremiah’s frustration as Jerusalem careered toward destruction is a frustration that we often feel ourselves. Our prayer experience feels lifeless and stifled. How can we unlock our prayer when we are feeling stuck, or when we find ourselves in Jeremiah’s prayer-shoes? Starting with Minha (Egalitarian & Orthodox services will be held). It’s traditional to wear tallit and tefillin for Minha on Tisha B’Av.

Join us on Thursday, July 23, from 12:00 to 1:30 PM for a Tisha B’Av gathering of mourning and action outside the Federal Building in Downtown LA. We will connect historical Jewish brokenness to modern struggles through prayer and sacred witnessing, featuring testimonies from an immigrant worker, a faith leader who has visited Adelanto Detention Center, and a family member of a detainee supported by the CLUE immigrant bond fund.
