The Spirit of Sodom Lives: Reflections From the Border

Shabbat Vayera Sermon. Abundant blessings hardened the hearts of the people of Sodom, who became not only inhospitable, but utterly ruthless. But the cruelty wasn’t only perpetrated by rogue actors, but justified through a complex system of laws designed to exact punishment on the most vulnerable. Our tradition warns us: Sodom and Gemorrah burned to the ground for embodying the very spirit that today defines our nation. What my recent trip to the border taught me about how the spirit of Sodom lives.
