When Good is Not Good Enough

By
Rabbi Sharon Brous

Shabbat Shemot Sermon. Being decent matters, but sometimes our simple goodness plays right into Pharaoh’s hands. Power can only sustain itself when the powerless get small — when we fight bullies but not the systems that embolden them. To be concerned only with our own dalet amot, our immediate sphere of influence, is to serve empire. We must learn the lesson God taught Moses from the burning bush: the hour demand that we be big.
