Join TRIBE for a guided tour of “Jewish Boyle Heights: Memories of Brooklyn Ave.,” a walking tour led by Shmuel Gonzales, the legendary “Barrio Boychik” and one of LA’s most beloved neighborhood historians. Together, we’ll explore the organizing, immigrant, labor, and multiracial Jewish history of Boyle Heights through the streets that shaped a generation of Jewish Los Angeles. Boy from the North Country: A Novel Monday, July 20, 6:30 PM PT Join us for a conversation on Boy from the North Country, Sam Sussman’s debut novel, a work of autofiction inspired by his own life. The Wolf Shall Dwell with the Lamb Monday, August 31, 6:30 PM PT Join us for a discussion of The Wolf Shall Dwell with the Lamb by Emmet Hirsch. Set in the Lebanese village of Behamdoun in 1931, the novel begins with the birth of Joseph Friedmann to a 15-year-old Syrian-Jewish girl hastily married to a Belgian businessman thirty years her senior. Joseph’s journey takes him through a Catholic convent, harrowing encounters with antisemitism, and eventually to Palestine during its War of Independence. Dog Monday, October 5, 6:30 PM PT Join us for a conversation on Dog by Yishay Ishi Ron, a harrowing, semi-autobiographical novel about an Israeli combat officer returning from Gaza with severe PTSD. Plagued by invisible wounds and moral injury, he spirals into heroin addiction and homelessness in Tel Aviv, until an unexpected bond with a stray dog offers a fragile path toward healing.
